Last night was the Senior's Honor Program and over $50,000 was awarded to our seniors from various civic organizations, family memorials, foundations and businesses. A huge thank you to everyone who supports our seniors with their future endeavors and for being generous with their resources.

Congratulations to Abigail Mowry (6th grader) for winning the poetry contest at the Caro Area District Library. She competed in the grade 6-8 bracket. A poem was submitted from every 6th grader. Great job Abigail!
5/13/13 > CONGRATULATIONS TO GRACE TALASKI!
Senior clarinet player, Grace Talaski, performed so well at State Solo and Ensemble last month that she qualified to participate in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Band, held May 9-11 on the campus of Western Michigan University. While there, Grace won the highly competitive audition for principal clarinet of the honors band. This basically means she is the best clarinet player in the state! Such an honor has never every been bestowed on a Caro musician. Way to go Grace!
5/01/13 > National Honor Society and the American Red Cross
The National Honor Society hosted a blood drive for the American Red Cross and surpassed their goal with three double donors for a total of 68 units. There were twenty-one new donors! The head nurse for the day expressed how pleased she was with the hard work of our members and the behavior of the students who donated. She further stated that she is in several schools through the year and our students were the best she has had all year! Congratulations to all!

Trey Mullin, 5th grade student at Schall Elementary and student of Mrs. Thompson, won the Poetry Contest sponsored by the Caro Area District Library. Congratulations Trey on winning the cash prize of $25.00.

4/11/13 > CHS Choir Travels to Chicago and Makes a Positive Impact
Twenty-seven Caro High School Choir Students and Thirteen Adults traveled to Chicago over Spring Break. Everyone returned safe and sound, tired and very happy after a Wonderful Trip. The Positive Attitude of our Students was noticed by the Chaperones and many others around us, especially when the Choir performed folk songs in the lobby of the theater. What a Great Reflection of our Caro Community Schools.
3/27/13 > SENIOR CLARINET PLAYER - GRACE TALASKI - RECEIVES NOMINATION IN THE MICHIGAN YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL HONORS BAND
Senior clarinet player Grace Talaski, daughter of Edward and Amy Talaski, has been nominated to perform with the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Band! This prestigious ensemble is made up of the top high school musicians who performed exceptionally well at State Solo and Ensemble last weekend. The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is a three-day extravaganza of master classes, exhibitions, workshops and performances at Western Michigan University. This yearly event showcases outstanding high school artists in over 50 interactive, hands-on, educational rehearsals, workshops and master classes, as well as nearly 20 performances and exhibitions. The level of talent is extraordinary. Students are challenged and inspired not only by the Festival’s educational programming, but also by opportunities for interaction with other artistically gifted peers. What a fine honor this is for Grace and the Caro band program!
3/26/13 > MSBOA STATE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE COMPETITION RESULTS
Congratulations; Marshall Abbs, Sammy Behrends, Johndra Diggs, Justin Fritz, and Grace Talaski, for excellent performances On Saturday, March 23, 2013. These five outstanding Caro High School band students performed at the MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble competition, held at Lapeer East High School. Students performed music for a judge who evaluated them on tone, intonation, rhythm, technique and interpretation. Students in 10-12 grade had to also perform memorized scales and sight reading in order to receive their rating. Sammy Behrends (oboe), Grace Talaski (clarinet), and Marshall Abbs (trombone) all performed excellent solos and earned the highest rating possible. Johndra Diggs (oboe) and Grace Talaski performed an exceptional duet, along with Marshall Abbs and Justin Fritz (euphonium) who also performed a duet.
3/26/13 > Caro Middle School - Sponsored College and Career Readiness
During the month of March Caro Middle School sponsored College and Career Readiness month, which included a daily trivia question, and both a College Day with an Educational Journey theme, and Career Day with fantastic participation from our community. In total 30 representatives came in to present to students with each student hearing from four different professionals. The month has been a huge success and we are hoping to make it an annual event in the Middle School.

3/26/13 > Caro High School Chapter of National Honor Society helped to Paint the Town Green

The Caro High School Chapter of the National Honor Society recently raised over $450.00 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by selling shamrocks. Our students helped to "paint the town green" by their efforts and donations to this cause.

3/15/13 > SR HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR FESTIVAL RESULTS
Congratulations to both Caro MS Choir and Caro HS Choir for their fine performances at Choir Festival, Thursday, March 14. Both choirs received a Division I rating from all three adjudicators, which is the highest possible rating. They were a wonderful representation of our music program as well as Caro Community Schools.
3/15/13 > ENVIROTHON TEAMS GO TO STATE COMPETITION
Congratulations to the Envirothon Teams for their fine performance at the Regional Competition held in Lapeer, Tuesday, March 12th. The Poseidon's Vixens team of Taylor Cullen, Kelsey Steele, Morgan Schriber, Blair Tiseo and Cole Schriber came in 1st place and the Competivores team of Ann Starling, Rebekah Rodriguez, Ashley Tompkins, Jonah Branding, and Logan Tompkins placed third in the region. Way to go teams and good luck at the State Competition to be held May 9 &10 at MSU.
3/14/13 > 7th Scholastic Book Fair Success at Middle School

Upon completion of the 7th Scholastic Book Fair at the Middle School, we earned $2021.48 in new books for the Middle School Media Center. Over the past seven years, hosting our Book Fair has earned our Middle School Media Center $14,595.02 in new books! This wouldn't be possible without the students, staff and parents supporting the Book Fair with their purchases every year!!

3/12/13 > ISC – Independent Swim Conference Results are In

Caro Varsity Boy's Swim Team competed Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23 at Standish Sterling High school in the year end League Conference. Individual preliminary events were held Friday night and the following swimmers made it to the Top Twelve Finals held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.; Travis Bauerschmidt, Mason Kastraba, Hayden Gibor, Tyler Putman, Brendan Makidon, Clayton Martin.

Results from Saturday's final events were Travis Bauerschmidt snapped his times in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly placing 7th in both events, Mason Kastraba placed 8th in the 100 Breaststroke, Hayden Gibor lowered his times in both the 500 Freestyle with a 8th place and a 7th place in the 100 Breaststroke, Tyler Putman placed 12th in the 100 Freestyle, Brendan Makidon placed 8th in the 100 Backstroke, and Clayton Martin placed 12th in the 100 Backstroke.

Saturday dive competition saw Ben Willoughby and Josh Schneider move on to Saturday afternoon finals. Ben Willoughby placed 4th moving him on to Regional Dive competition on March 5th in Haslett, MI and Josh Schneider placing 5th for a point earning position.

Caro's A Medley Relay team of Brendan Makidon, Hayden Gibor, Travis Bauerschmidt and Cole Schriber placed 4th, the B Team of Jonah Branding, Mason Kastraba, Clayton Martin and Ben Willoughby placed 6th and the C Team of Max Gierman, Ethan Sanger, Tyler Putman and Josh Schneider placed 8th.

Caro's A 200 Freestyle Relay team of Mason Kastraba, Geoff Mowry, Cole Schriber, and Tyler Loubert placed 5th, the B Team of Jonah Branding, Tyler Putman, Josh Schneider and Ben Willoughby placed 8th and the C Team of Austin Schian, Max Gierman, Dustin LeValley and Ethan Sanger placed 10th.

Caro's A 400 Freestyle Relay team of Travis Bauerschmidt, Brendan Makidon, Cole Schriber and Hayden Gibor placed 9th, the B Team of Tyler Putman, Clayton Martin, Geoff Mowry and Mason Kastraba placed 10th, the C Team of Ethan Sanger, Tyler Loubert, Jonah Branding, and Ben Willoughby placed 11th and the D Team of Josh Schneider, Austin Schian, Dustin LeValley and Max Gierman placed 12th.

All relay teams were point earning places and helped the team in overall success.

The swimmers efforts landed them a 4th place in the overall ISC.

3/06/13 > BOWLING AND WRESTLING STATE FINALS!
Bowling State Finals Team event this year we had the boys bowling team participate this past Friday and they did not advance out of the morning round of bowling but had a great season. The lane conditions on Friday were tough but they represent Caro Community Schools very well. Please tell them a nice job on the season.

Bowling State Finals for Individuals we had our very own Adrianna Jackson who finished in the top 8 for girls individual bowling finals this past weekend in Jackson. She qualified to the top sixteen out of sixty bowlers by bowling a 1097 total pins in the overall play. Then she placed 12th in the bracket play. She was matched up against a #5 seed and beat her by 8 pins. Adrianna then bowled against the eventual state runner up to finish in the top 8 losing by 9 pins. If you see Adrianna please congratulate her on a great tournament run.

Wrestling Individual State Finals we had 8 wrestlers who headed to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday and they all did a great job. We had 5 of our 8 wrestlers finish in the top 8 in the state with 2 state runner ups. Skylar Ley Finished in 2nd place in the weight class 160, Trevor Jaster finished in 2nd place in the weight class of 171, Shane Herriman finished 4th in the weight class of 119, Marshall Conley finished 6th in weight class 130, Kendall Betteridge finished 7th in the weight class of 189. We also had a few wrestlers who did not make the top ten eight but represented Caro Community Schools very well and those wrestlers are Trevor O'Connor, Chance Eremia, and Brett Green. If you see any of these young men please tell them congratulations on a great season.

I was able to attend both of these events and I am very proud of these young men and women and the way they represented Caro Community Schools. Go Tigers!!!!!!!

2/25/13 > HIGH SCHOOL AND 8TH GRADE BANDS EARN TOP RATING!
Congratulations to the members of the high school band and 8th grade for a fine performance at band festival this weekend at North Branch High School. Even with all the snow days they still earned the top rating of I for musical excellence!
2/25/13 > DORICE TORMA RECEIVES MOST SPIRITED TEACHER AWARD!
The Saginaw Spirit Hockey Club will honor Dorice Torma at the 8th Annual Spirited Teacher Game sponsored by Dow Corning on Saturday, March 2nd. Mrs. Torma is a fifth grade teacher at Schall Elementary School. Students at Schall Elementary voted for the teacher they feel is most deserving of the award. Mrs. Torma received the most votes and she will be honored during an on-ice ceremony at the Spirit game on March 2nd. Mrs. Torma will receive a special gift, compliments of Dow Corning and the Saginaw Spirit, along with complimentary tickets for her family to the game.

2/12/13 > BAND MEMBERS RECEIVE HIGH RATINGS!
Eleven Caro High School band students participated in the MSBOA District III Solo and Ensemble Competition on Saturday, February 9 at Imlay City High School. Marshall Abbs (trombone), Logan Allen (trombone), Sammy Behrends (oboe), David Dunham (trumpet), Laura Keyworth (trumpet), and Grace Talaski (clarinet) performed solos.

Duets were performed by: Johndra Diggs (oboe) and Grace Talaski, as well as Justin Fritz (euphonium) and Marshall Abbs (tuba). A saxophone trio was comprised of of Nicole Hodges (soprano sax), Savannah Schneider (alto sax), and Jesse Wiederhold (bari sax).

Each student performed for a judge who gave them verbal and written comments as well as a roman numeral rating (I is the highest). This proved to be a valuable learning experience for the student musicians.

Marshall, Logan, Sammy, Johndra, Justin, and Grace performed exceptionally well and received a superior rating of I, which qualifies them to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble event, to be held on Saturday, March 23 at Lapeer East High School.

Students were accompanied on the piano by Mr. Behrends, Mrs. Gettel, Mrs. Karabats, and Ms. Titus.
1/28/13 > STUDENTS PERFORM IN MSBOA DISTRICT III HONORS BAND!
Saturday, January 26th, nine middle school and high school band members were selected to perform in the MSBOA District III Honors Band held at Brandon High School in Ortonville. Rachel Braun, Raymond Humes, Seth Chapelo, Emma Will, Johdra Diggs, Grace Talaski, David Dunham, Marshall Abbs, and Justin Fritz rehearsed all morning and afternoon in preparation for an excellent evening concert. Band director Rachel Karabats played lead trombone in the 'band directors jazz band' that day, which performed for the students during lunch. The Caro Music Boosters paid the registration fee for all nine students so they could attend this wonderful honors band event. The students did an excellent job representing Caro Community Schools and the Caro Band Program.
1/10/13 > NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY STUDENTS DONATE TIME!
The 37 members of the Caro Chapter of the National Honor Society performed 1,110 hours of community service during the last six months of 2012! Students donated their time to multiple groups and activities to help our town and its residents. Congratulations and thank you National Honor Society students!
12/04/12 > MS BAND STUDENTS ARE A SUCCESS AT SOLO & ENSEMBLE!
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOLO AND ENSEMBLE: Twenty one 7thand 8thgrade Caro band students performed at MSBOA District III Solo and Ensemble on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at North Branch High School. The students performed for a judge and were given verbal and written comments. Students with an asterisk by their name received a first division rating, which means they performed exceptionally well.

Eighth graders Hal Hudson Jr. (trombone), Mason Mullins (alto saxophone), Cheyenne Popp (flute), Alyssa Singer (flute), Caspian Thompson (flute), and Emma Will* (trumpet) performed solos. Duets were performed byEmma Will* and Hal Hundson Jr.,* as well as Carmen Foster(clarinet) and Kylee Kunse (alto saxophone).

Seventh graders Seth Chapelo* (alto saxophone), Raymond Humes (clarinet), Cole Keyworth* (alto saxophone), Makalie Orton (flute), and Katrina Woichan* (flute) performed solos. Duets were performed by Kaylin Clements* (trumpet) and Rachel Braun* (flute); Wyatt Katz*(trumpet) and Austin Mozden* (alto saxophone); Raymond Humes and Seth Chapelo, and Makalie Orton (flute) and Mackenzie Reno (flute).

12/04/12 > HS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY HOLD SUCCESSFUL BLOOD DRIVE
The Caro Chapter of the National Honor Society sponsored a very successful blood drive on Tuesday, December 4th. Members recruited 86 possible donors with a goal of donating 61 pints. They surpassed that goal with 3 double reds and 66 pints. Co-chairs Katie Tiseo and Taylor Cullen garnered accolades from Sal Ausiello, the RDR representative of the American Red Cross, for the outstanding job they did running the drive.. All members of the chapter worked hard to achieve their goal and are commended for their efforts!
11/19/12 > FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS!
The Caro Chapter of the National Honor Society recently conducted a successful food drive for Spoonful of Plenty, a local community organization which provides free meals for needy citizens in Caro.
Because of their efforts in collecting 608 Thanksgiving items and $120.00, they are providing Thanksgiving dinner this week to over 300 people. Congratulations NHS members!
11/09/12 > FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS WIN AT SVSU!
Congratulations to the foreign language students who completed yesterday at SVSU with 700 other students. Our combined team of French, German and Spanish students placed second out of 30 teams in the International Awareness Contest. In addition our presentation on multiple languages placed third.
11/05/12 > FORMER CARO STUDENT NEHEMIAH KISH PERFORMS
Former Caro High School student Nehemiah Kish is performing in “Swan Lake” at the Saginaw Fashion Square Cinema. The following was received from Rose Putnam of Caro . . . "I just had to share with you what an awesome experience I had on Sunday. I went to see "Swan Lake" at the Saginaw Fashion Square Cinema. If you have been questioning whether you had time to go, don't hesitate. This is a must see! The next show is Tuesday night. Nehemiah Kish is FABULOUS! The tickets are $15.00."

The Tuscola County Advertiser reported: "If you've never had the chance to see a ballet in person, the next best thing is coming to Saginaw and it will showcase Caro's own Nehemiah Kish. On Sunday, November 4th & Tuesday, November 6th, The Royal Opera House of London will showcase Swan Lake at Fashion Square Cinema in Saginaw. The showing is part of the 2012-13 cinema relay, now showing around the world. Sunday's performance will be featured at 2 pm and Tuesday's performance will be shown at 7 pm. Tickets are $15 each.

Kish resides in London where he is a Principal performer with The Royal Ballet, an internationally renowned classical ballet company, based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Kish left his home in Caro at age 14 to enter Canada's residential National Ballet School. He worked his way up the ranks in the National Ballet of Canada and earned the coveted role of Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake."

As the Caro Girls 2012 home swim season has come to a conclusion, there are a few people that I would like to thank. I would like to thank you and all of the previous Caro High School Athletic Directors for always providing the tools needed to run a quality swim program, including Lynn Werth, Perry Baranic, and Beth Striffler.

I would like to thank the “team” responsible for scoring the meet: Lee, Janet, Stacy and Terri. They are the best! I have been a high school swimming official for 35 years and the scoring team at Caro High School is head and shoulders above the rest!

I would like to thank the coaches, Woody and Brian, for always having the pool and the swimmers ready to swim and compete.

I would like to thank the Caro Tigers’ swim fans; they have always been polite and friendly to me.

Most of all I would like to thank the swimmers themselves. The swimmers have always been friendly and demonstrated great sportsmanship.
10/29/12 > CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS ROCK!
Great job, Caro Cross Country Teams! Both teams qualified for the State Finals at MIS in Brooklyn, Michigan. The ladies team dominated regionals, led by Regional Champion and new school record holder, Monica Ellicott. Emily Cockerill ran a time fast enough to place her on the All Time Top 10 Record Board. The men captured the 3rd and final spot beating Flint Powers by 3 points.
10/25/12 > CONGRATULATIONS TO EMMA BECKROW!
Emma Beckrow, a 4th grader in Mrs. Hauxwell's class, was featured on Channel 25 news as the "Student of the Month". She was nominated for her selfless work of making fleece blankets for foster children, as well as for children in hospitals. She explained how she knows this helps children feel better. She has been making blankets since she was 4 years old & is now on her 2nd year of making 100 blankets for Christmas as a donation. This summer she also donated her hair to the Pantene program.

It is because of Emma's caring and giving nature that she was nominated & recognized by Channel 25's program. Congratulations Emma!

This year Caro Middle School is recognizing Students of the Month from each class. Every month one girl and one boy in each grade will be selected for their outstanding effort and achievement. For September, the winners were Caleb Cotton, nominated by Mrs. Schimdt, and Brooklyn Bilicki, nominated by Mr. Haag from the sixth grade; Brody Barnes, nominated by both Mr. Peter and Ms. Bailey, and Mackenzie Reno, nominated by Miss Dinkel, from the seventh grade; and eighth graders Tristan Campbell and Hal Hudson, Jr., both nominated by Mrs. Hall. Keep up the good work students!

Four 2012 CHS band graduates have auditioned for and received membership in their university marching bands. Niklas Andersson - SVSU drumline; Erik Andersson - SVSU drumline; Tessa Gawrylowicz - GVSU color guard; and Saluditorian Allie Steele - SVSU color guard. Congratulations!
7/23/12 > STUDENTS ATTEND BAND CAMP!
Nine Caro High School Marching Band students participated in the Fred J. Miller Clinics, July 8-11 in Midland. This four day clinic was designed to further students’ knowledge, develop their leadership skills and exude confidence in their abilities through high energy & positive instruction, so they can be more effective members of the marching band. Drum Majors Allie Brown and Garrett Rockwell, Twirlers Crystal Messing and Ann Starling, Color Guard Members Heather Avery, Teresa Foster, Kathryn Herrmann, Makenzee Smith & Kelsey Steele received daily technical instruction as well as team building and motivational sessions. The camp culminated with a public performance at Northwood University, where the Caro students earned the "Excellence in Teamwork Award." The Jerry W. Zuercher Endowment Fund for the Musical Arts and the Caro Band Boosters helped pay for camp tuition.

Former longtime Baseball Coach Leon Graham, will be inducted in to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on June 25th! Congratulations to Leon!
5/18/12 > ENVIROTHON TEAM FINISHED 3RD IN STATE!
Congratulations to the Envirothon team consisting of Kent Schriber, Allie Torres, Bailey Cockerill, Morgan Schriber and Kelsey Steele for their accomplishments at the Michigan Envirothon State Competition held at LSSU last week. The team earned second place medals in the categories of Energy and Forestry and finished third in the state overall. For their third place finish these students have been awarded $1000 scholarships to both Michigan State University and Lake Superior State University.

According to the US News and World Report, Caro High School is ranked #42 for best high schools in the State of Michigan! This is based on College Readiness, Math Proficiency and Reading Proficiency. Congratulations High School staff and students!
5/01/12 > FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMPETITION A SUCCESS!
CMU Foreign Language Competition Results: Congratulations to the German, French, and Spanish students for their success on Friday, April 27. This was the 40th annual Foreign Language Day and 30 some schools attended this year with only 15 schools earning top honors. Over 60 Caro students competed and won six awards including one third place, three second places, and two first places trophies.

“I would like you to know what a wonderful young man you have playing on your Junior Varsity Baseball Team. The first baseman #16 was the best example of sportsmanship I have witnessed in a very long time. Not only did he play the game with pride he congratulated players on nice hits and other things during the game. He also was just as friendly to us opposing fans. His family and your school system very much should be quite proud of him.”

4/19/12 > GREAT JOB ACADEMIC GAMES TEAMS!
Congratulations to the Caro High School Academic Games Teams. They competed at Saginaw Valley State University yesterday. Nine schools participated in the competition this year. The Math Team (Bailey Cockerill, Bobby McCoy, Rebekah Rodriguez, Grace Talaski, and Richelle Varney) and the Tech Team (Tias Andrade, Jacob Daniel, Mitch Holmes, Troy Kausch, Jenna Luth, Kent Schriber, and Fletcher Vaughan) both finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to Athletic Director Beth Striffler for being chosen to be a part of a panel at Central Michigan University recently. The event was put on by the Center for Global Sport Leadership. The Town Hall Meeting addressed the critical issues facing interscholastic sports. It was a great forum for discussing the challenges and solutions that are facing high school athletics across the state and nation.

Caro Middle School and High School Choirs (a total of 95 students) participated in Choir Festival on March 15, 2012 where they each performed two rehearsed selections and sightreading exercises. These performances were judged by three professional adjudicators who based their ratings on tone quality, intonation, technique, rhythm, and musicianship. Both choirs performed beautifully, receiving a Superior Rating ( I ) from all three judges. Keep up the great work. Both choirs are under the direction of Tammie Kosters. Congratulations Caro Choirs!

The Caro HS Jazz Band was one of three bands selected to participate in the 2012 SVSU Jazz Invitational Clinic on Friday, March 2nd. The band performed for a panel of professional jazz musicians who gave them verbal comments. Then they listened to other high school jazz bands in the morning and worked with the professional jazz musicians in a more one-on-one setting in the afternoon. Congratulations to the Jazz band!

Congratulations to the High School Jazz Band for participating in the CMU Jazz Weekend Festival this past Friday (February 9). The band performed three pieces for three judges who gave them written feedback. The students were also able to listen to other high school jazz bands. The next jazz band performance will be in March when they travel to SVSU to participate in the SVSU Jazz Invitational Clinic.
2/13/12 > BAND MEMBERS PERFORM AT DISTRICT SOLO & ENSEMBLE
Seven Caro High School band students participated in the MSBOA District III Solo and Ensemble competition on Saturday, February 11 at Imlay City High School. Johndra Diggs (oboe), David Dunham (trumpet), Allison Learman (piano), Katie Manwell (horn and piano) Crystal Messing (flute), and Grace Talaski (clarinet) performed solos. Johndra and Grace also performed a duet. Each student performed for a judge who gave them verbal and written comments as well as a roman numeral rating. This proved to be a valuable learning experience for the student musicians. Every event but one received a superior rating of I, which qualifies them to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble event to be held on Saturday, March 24, at Lapeer East High School.
2/06/12 > THREE CARO BAND MEMBERS SELECTED FOR TRI-COUNTY HONORS BAND!
Three Caro High School band members: Grace Talaski (clarinet), Johndra Diggs (oboe), and Logan Allen (trombone), were selected to represent Caro High School in the 54th annual Tri-County Honors Band held at Peck High School on Sunday, February 5. The honors band consisted of the top high school band students from Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties. The band rehearsed Saturday morning and afternoon in preparation for a Sunday afternoon concert. The honors band was directed by Dr. Christopher Heidenreich, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Michigan Flint. Mrs. Rachel Karabats was the emcee for the Sunday afternoon concert.

Six Caro High School Choir students traveled to USA schools Monday to participate in the TFOTA Solo and Ensemble. Five out of the six events received a superior ( I ) rating, with the sixth event receiving a good ( II ) rating. These students represented Caro well, both in their abilities and behavior. Performing solos: Hannah Erbacher, Megan Ewald, Laura Burger, and Madalyn McHugh. A trio was sung by Megan Ewald, Laura Burger and Madalyn McHugh. A duet was sung by Alyssa Lawrence and Chelsea Melrose. Congratulations!

Eight Caro band students were selected to perform in the MSBOA District III Honors Band on Saturday, January 28 at Brandon High School in Ortonville, Michigan. Cheyenne Popp (7th grade flute), Samantha Behrends (8th grade oboe), Mallory Fini (8th grade trumpet), Ashley Braun (8th grade trombone), Grace Talaski ( 11th grade clarinet), David Dunham (11th grade trumpet), Katie Manwell (10th grade horn), and Kodey Kirk (12th grade tuba) worked very hard from 9:30am-4:30pm, preparing difficult music for a 6pm concert. The band students represented Caro Schools well. Mrs. Karabats had fun playing lead trombone in the "Educators Jazz Band" which performed an afternoon concert for the students. Congratulations & great job!

Following a recent swim meet, a Corunna parent phoned the Athletic Director to let her know how noticeably polite our boy's swim team was. She said that not only were they polite, but that their overall attitude was great!

Caro Middle School Student Council held a penny drive contest to benefit Juvenile Diabetes. The students were able to raise 1300.00 for this cause. Winners of the contest were the 6th grade class and they earned free popcorn and pop to enjoy during our student council sponsored holiday movie.

Superintendent Nelson would like to thank our staff for their cooperation in recouping $191,651. from the State Aid Best Practices Incentive. In order to receive this incentive, we had to meet five conditions:
1. Obtain competitive bids on non-instructional services
2. Employees sharing in the cost of health insurance
3. Being the policy holder for our medical benefits plans
4. Implement a consolidation or shared services plan
5. Place a dashboard similar to the State’s on our website.

It took the cooperation of ALL staff to meet these various conditions. Thank you for helping to provide these extra funds for educating our children!

At the TVC-East Cross Country Jamboree #1 at North Branch, the ladies won the meet and the Caro men finished 2nd overall. The Tigers Cross Country team heads to Holly this Saturday.

The Caro High School equestrian team hosted two meets this weekend with twenty schools participating. On Saturday, Caro finished in 2nd place behind Lakeville with 72 pts and on Sunday, we also finished in 2nd place behind Lakeville with 67 pts. Our high point rider for both days was sophomore Emily Dunham who earned a 2nd place in western bareback riding and several 3rd places in different events. Senior Laura Burger took 2nd place in Western Showmanship and Trail along with earning pts in other classes. Freshman Leah Zawerucha rode Saddleseat for the first time and earned several pts for the team. Our speed rider, senior Emily Snyder, also contributed pts for the team. Our next meet is at Bad Axe next Sunday, come out and support our Tigers on horseback!
8/09/11 > JEREMY BALL RECEIVES GRANT ON BEHALF OF STUDENTS AT MCCOMB ELEMENTARY
McComb Elementary School received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Janks Fund in the Tuscola County Community Foundation's 2011 Spring Grant Round and an additional $6,000 from the McComb Tiger Paws Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The grant, written by Jeremy Ball, along with the PTO donation has been used to purchase two SMART boards, a SMART Response System, an iMac, and 15 iPads. McComb students will be able to use this equipment in McComb’s Math Intervention Lab beginning with the 2011-2012 school year.

5/27/11 > 4TH GRADE STUDENTS FOLD PAPER ORIGAMI CRANES IN HONOR OF PEACE DAY!
Students in Ms. Kuntz and Mrs. Shufelt's room (4th grade) were inspired by a study of the story "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes." Over the last several months they have joined together and to fold 1000 individual paper origami cranes that will be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan. The cranes will be placed at the memorial on August 6th in honor of Peace Day.

Senior Brandon Swick submitted two amazing typographic drawings, one of Walt Disney and one of Mickey Mouse, for an art competition. Brandon is enrolled in the Advertising Design program with instructor Sheryl Martin at TTC and an art student at Caro High School with Deanna LaLonde. HE WON! As a result he has received a $43,000 scholarship to Kendal Art Institute! Congratulations to Brandon!

5/03/11 > MCCOMB ELEMENTARY PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT A SUCCESS!
McComb Elementary recently held a Parent Education Night using Title funds. With most of the staff and about 70 parents attending, the evening started off with an informative and entertaining skit by Mrs. Wenzlaff, Ms. LaBerge, Mrs. Binder and Mrs. Miklovic on how to handle homework. Parents then broke into 15 minute individual sessions on activities parents could do at home. Some of the topics were spelling, reading and phonemic awareness and all sessions were facilitated by teachers. Child care was provided and the evening ended with pizza for both parents and children.

A big thanks to Mr. Wheeler and Mrs. Wenzlaff for organizing the event and to teachers and staff for making this event a success. Great job by everyone!

Coach Lynch, Coach Berry, and Coach Striffler would like to give a shout to the Varsity softball team for their exciting play at the County Tournament in Vassar on Saturday. They started out the day with a 1-0 victory over Mayville, and held off a late comeback by Millington in the second game 8-7. They would put together a brilliant 7th inning in the championship game, but fell to Vassar 6-5. Good Work Ladies!

On Wednesday, April 13th, five teams from Caro High School competed in the Tuscola County Academic Games competition at Saginaw Valley State
University. Out of the five teams competing, ALL FIVE teams placed within top positions and received trophies. The English and Social Studies teams placed first in the county, the Science and Math teams placed second in the county, and the Technology team placed third in the county.

3/23/11 > A THANK YOU FROM MRS. KURAS, MIDDLE SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER!
During the week of March 7-10, I hosted the annual Scholastic Book Fair in the Middle School Media Center. Thursday after school, I had not reached my goal of $3,000 in sales, meaning our profit would only be 50% of our sales instead of 60% in book profits. At the staff meeting the following day, the Middle School Staff decided to do whatever it took to make sure I reached my goal and I'm happy to report that we not only reached it, we surpassed it! Our total sales were $3046.12! With customer rewards and bonuses, we netted $1,937.68 in book profit for the Media Center this year, resulting in over 200 new books for the library. Over the past five years, I have brought in $10,332.62 in new books for the library from hosting the Scholastic Book Fair!!! Thanks to the Middle School Staff this year for helping me achieve that goal!

Rachel Karabats, Band Instructor, has been selected to participate in the Marine Corps Educators Workshop. She will travel with other Michigan educators to San Diego, CA and learn first hand what it's like to be in the Marine Corps. She will learn about the physical and academic components of basic training, witness water survival, rappelling, martial arts, bayonet assault training, listen to a Marine Band concert, travel to the Marine Corps air station Miramar (once the home of Top Gun), and visit Camp Pendelton. Congratulations to Mike Wiederhold, IT Technician, for applying for and receiving a grant valued at $4,000 for an Extron Polevault system that was recently installed in the HS Media Center. The package includes a four speaker sound system, two microphones, and a wall mounted controller that centrally manages the data projector, laptop computer and dvd/vcr. 2/11/11 > CARO WRESTLERS ARE DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations to the Wrestling Team, as they were crowned District Champions by defeating Millington in the Semi-Finals 56-16 and beating Otisville-Lakeville in the Finals 48-27. The Tigers move on to Imlay City next Wednesday for Regional action to take on host Imlay City, who the Tigers defeated last week on the 8th criterion Tiebreaker Rule (32-31). The winner will most likely take on the Number one State raked Richmond Blue Devils to determine who will advance to the final 8 in the state. Best of Luck TIGERS.
2/07/11 > FACT MONSTERS INVADE MCCOMB SCHOOL!
First and Second grade students at McComb School recently competed in a math fact competition on www.factmonster.com in the Math Intervention Lab. Students solved addition flash cards on the computer and earned a point for every problem they solved correctly. Mrs. Lester’s class was the 2nd grade winner, correctly solving 8,855 problems. Mrs. Miklovic’s class won the 1st grade competition, solving 4,036 problems. These classes enjoyed a pizza party, with pizzas donated by Louise Hodges and Caro Pizza Hut. Congratulations to the following students for being individual round high scorers: Zachary Soper, Kevin Wilson, Collin Fall, Kimberly Stowell, and Ayush Patel. They each received a certificate for a Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut. Overall, throughout the competition, McComb 1st and 2nd grade students correctly solved 60,789 addition problems! Great job everyone, and thank you to Caro Pizza Hut for providing pizza for our winners!

I would like to thank the members of the Key Club for assisting the Kiwanis Club's sponsorship of Spoonful of Plenty. With the support of the students in the Key Club who served food and drinks, bussed tables, washed dishes, took out trash, and welcomed people with a smile, 90+ people were served a hot meal at no cost to them. 1/18/11 > CHOIR STUDENTS GO TO ANN ARBOR!
On January 8, 2011, Caro High School Choir director, Tammie Kosters, accompanied five students (Celeste McNiel, Madalyn McHugh, Troy Mullin, Sarah Matuszak, & Alyssa Deming) to Vocal Arts Day in Ann Arbor. Vocal Arts Day was held at the University of Michigan and hosted by the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs. Students from all across the state gathered together Saturday morning to learn more about singing, be encouraged by peers around them, and sing their hearts out all day long! Students rehearsed from 9:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. to perfect several songs which they performed at 4:00 p.m. to a full house in the world renowned Hill Auditorium. The concert began with the performance of the 500 young girls who worked diligently to perform with those around them. The girls were followed by the U of M Women’s Glee Club, the 300 voice choir made up of young male students, and lastly the U of M Men’s Glee Club. Caro students have expressed their gratefulness for the opportunity to grow musically. Together, they experienced the indescribable feeling of hard work resulting in beautiful success. What a wonderful experience for our choir students to grow!

1/07/11 > GREAT JOB HS STUDENT COUNCIL IN RECYCLING OLD TENNIS SHOES!
The HS Student Council recently participated in a Tennis Shoe collection called “Sole in Peace Out” put on by Nike for the purpose of recycling used tennis shoes. The folks at the Nike Outlet in Birch Run were both shocked and pleased with the number of shoes they brought in. They said they have not seen this many shoes at one time!! The program does have a limit of 200 shoes and we met that limit. Great job!

For the Student Council’s Annual Christmas community service project, the students selected the Make-A-Wish Foundation as their charity for the penny drive. With 2 snow days complicating the collection schedule, the students of Caro High School donated $2020.11 in the five school days preceding Christmas Break. The top 4 classrooms with the highest per student average were awarded a donut party this week!

The Envirothon teams, "The Envirotrons" and the "Mighty Monarchs" placed 1st and 2nd respectively at the Envirothon Regional held March 22nd in Lapeer. This qualifies them to compete against the other top teams in the State at the State Competition to be held May 13th & 14th at the Leelanau Outdoor Center in Maple City, Michigan. As part of their Community Outreach Project, the teams have planned and begun construction on a rain garden and a butterfly garden on the CHS campus.

On April 23rd, Caro High School took five teams of students to SVSU to compete in the annual Tuscola County Academic Games competition. All five teams placed at the event, with the Math and English teams receiving a first place trophy. Each year, the Tri-Valley Conference holds an Honors Program at which students from each of the TVC schools are recognized for their commitment to excellence throughout their high school career. The students are selected based on a formula that considers Grade Point Average and ACT scores. 3/24/10 > MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR HAS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE
On Thursday, March 18, 2010, the Caro Middle School Choir traveled to USA schools to perform at the Thumb Friends of the Arts Music Festival. They sang two musical numbers of contrasting nature in front of two judges, who graded them on many aspects of music, including overall musicianship.

One of the judges then worked with the choir, giving them suggestions on how to improve. The choir performed very well and received a I from both judges, which is the highest score possible. The students represented their school very well and came back to Caro excited about their accomplishment. The Middle School Choir is directed by Tamara Kosters.

This money will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for their continuing research to find a cure for diabetes. Great job!

Congratulations to band students Jillian Talaski (clarinet, grade 12) and Jenna Mervyn (flute, grade 11), Abbie Brown (trumpet, grade 8), Crystal Messing (flute, grade 8), and Charlea Mossner (clarinet, grade 7) for participating in the MSBOA District III Honors Band on Saturday, January 31 at Brandon High School in Ortonville. These students were recommended by Miss McGiness based on their solo and ensemble scores, playing ability, and positive attitude in class. After an intense morning and afternoon of rehearsals, the students performed an evening concert in the beautiful auditorium at Brandon High School.

Congratulations to Bailey Cockerill, Erika Roe & Thomas Matuszak who were All-State athletes this Fall. Bailey was All-State in Golf and Erika & Tommy were All-State in Cross Country!
